Our Story

“Leading the Field”

In the late 1950s, there was a severe shortage of professionals working in film art, and much of the work was handled by those involved in stage productions such as theater and musicals. As a result, film sets often lacked a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. However, Doseon Equipment, as the company of Korea's first art director, emerged as a groundbreaking presence in film art, establishing itself as a dominant force in the field.

“Changes in The Film Industry”

In 1973, Noh In-taek joined the Korean Film Council, established under the 4th revision of the Film Law, as a production designer. At that time, the Film Council directly produced large-scale national films such as Testimony (증언), Parade of Wives (아내들의 행진) (Im Kwon-taek, 1974), The Wild Flowers In The Battle Field (들국화는 피었는데) (Lee Man-hee, 1974), and Taebaek Mountains (태백산맥) (Kwon Yeong-sun, 1975), with the goal of setting a model for domestic films and presenting a desirable direction for film production. Noh In-taek brought in Lee Bong-sun's Doseon Equipment team to oversee the art direction for these films.

In the late 1970s, Noh In-taek's participation in films was relatively limited. This was due to the Korean film industry being in a prolonged recession, leading to a sharp decline in the number of films being produced.

“Era of Color TV”

In the early 1980s, as broadcasting and films transitioned to color, the demand for movies decreased while the demand for advertisements increased. Noh In-taek, who participated as an advisory member in the Korean standard color selection project, became the head of Nama Jinheung Filming Studio in 1985, where he primarily focused on creating art for commercials rather than traditional movies. During this period, he only worked on one film, Macarian Go (마카리안 고) (Kim Wan-gi, 1987). In 1992, he also served as an advisory member for the construction of the Korea Studio Complex in Namyangju.

“Film Makers During The IMF Crisis”

Nama Set expanded its business capabilities when Noh In-taek's son, Noh Seung-guk, established a new corporate entity under the name Nama Art Center. Noh Seung-guk himself also served as an art director.

In the early 1990s, the market share of Korean films was less than 15%, so Nama continued to focus primarily on the production of commercials. However, after the IMF crisis and into the late 1990s, major films began to gain prominence, signaling a shift in the industry.

“The Renaissance of Korean Film”

The company began making significant investments in film art production by participating in major Korean films such as Oldboy and Memories of Murder. Talented individuals with artistic skills from fields like literature and fine arts were increasingly drawn to the film industry.

In the early 2000s, the company established SangSang Gong Jack So, centered around the early stage design graduates of the Korea National University of Arts. This marked the creation of Korea's first dual-structure system combining production designers and a set construction company, setting a new standard in the industry.

“Amid Challenges of COVID, NSN Thrives”

In 2019, global awards, including recognition for the art direction of Parasite, along with the international success of BTS and BlackPink, showcased Korea's production capabilities on a global stage. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the increased demand for content production fueled NSN's significant growth, establishing it as a comprehensive art company at a global level. The company is now making bold investments once again to embrace new changes and innovations.

“Rising Period of Films - Birth of Nama”

Noh In-taek (the second generation), who had shown a talent for painting at an early age, became the adopted son of Lee Bong-sun and started working at Doseon Equipment.

Noh In-taek succeeded Doseon Equipment and established "Nama Set," where he actively engaged in set production, the main task of the art department during the 1950s to 1970s.

In the late 1960s, the Korean film industry entered an era of high production volume, with over 200 films being made annually from 1968 onwards. Considering the total number of films produced during that period, the number of films Noh In-taek worked on accounted for nearly one-fifth of the films produced in that time.
